MSJW, a movement identity built to travel.

Mississippi for a Just World needed a public identity with the weight of history and the urgency of action. We created a mark that could live on a website, a protest sign, a podium, a t-shirt and a social post, without losing its message.

The challenge

MSJW was born from grassroots energy, but its mission needed a visual form that could organize attention quickly. The identity had to speak to Mississippi’s civil rights legacy while connecting that local struggle to global movements for dignity, justice and human rights.

The brief was not simply to make a logo. It was to create a public symbol that could hold emotion, seriousness and hope across many contexts, from formal communications to community actions.

For a young organization, recognition matters. The mark needed to be clear at small sizes, bold on apparel, strong on video and flexible enough to support education, policy, advocacy and outreach.

The approach

We built the identity around the abbreviated name MSJW, turning it into a compact civic banner. The heavy letterforms give the mark visual authority, while the dove and olive branch shift the energy from protest alone to peace, protection and a just future.

The palette balances rootedness and movement: deep navy for trust and historical weight, blue for public clarity, teal for renewal and forward motion. The system is direct by design, because community brands must be understood in seconds.

Every application was considered as a living touchpoint. The logo had to work on a black t-shirt, a white document, a mobile social post and a public event backdrop with equal force.
